Bloomington, Indiana based startup CV Hops LLC was granted a patent in 2022 for its new variety, a hop plant named CV-12 (Patent #: PP34075). The plant is derived from a privately held, proprietary genetic line called CVC™ also owned by CV Hops LLC. This groundbreaking discovery of this new hops variety perfectly suited to Southern Indiana has the potential to change the hops industry as we know it.
The original homestead at Clear View Farm was constructed in the late 1860’s. Previous generations of owners have noted hop plants were cultivated on the property since its founding. The original use for the plant was most likely not for brewing but for bread making. Lupulin present in hops prevents the unwanted growth of bacteria in beer, but in the 19th century this feature was used to cultivate wild baking yeast from the air. Founders Travis Wade and Mike Baker hold photos of the original Clear View Farm homesteaders.
Diverse, Locally Grown Flavors
CV Hops LLC has produced midwest-adapted hop cultivars with varied and distinct flavor profiles: a mild, floral pre-prohibition varietal and a modern, strong citrus cultivar.
Climate Change
Our products originate from the Midwest, are adapted to weather fluctuations, and are resilient to the stressors associated with climate instability.
Originally domesticated in the late 1890s, this pre-prohibition hop’s first use was to cultivate baking yeast from the air. After being cultivated on Clear View Farms for over 100 years, CVC™ is being used in modern brewing programs. As a Hop predating modern breeding, it has a naturally mild grassy, floral flavor. With a moderate alpha acid content and an extremely low myrcene content, CVC™ hops produce a natural, clean flavor.
CV-12 is an aroma hop bred by CV Hops LLC having unique and highly favored flavor characteristics. CV-12 was domesticated from a native hop originating from the Midwest. CV-12 produces large, loose cones, has a very high growth rate and a unique citrus, spicy, piney character.
